Vietnam is the second largest supplier of cassava starch to the Taiwan (China) market.

In the first 8 months of 2023, Vietnam is the second largest cassava starch supplier to the Taiwan (China) market.

The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited statistics from the Taiwan Finance Authority (China) saying that in the first 8 months of 2023, the Taiwan market imported 220.39 thousand tons of cassava starch ( HS 110814), worth 114.47 million USD, down 34.7% in volume and 36.1% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Laos are the largest markets supplying cassava starch to the Taiwan market. In particular, Taiwan’s tapioca starch imports from Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos decreased; while imports from Indonesia increased sharply over the same period in 2022.

In the first 8 months of 2023, Vietnam is the second largest market supplying cassava starch in the Taiwan market, reaching 30.61 thousand tons, worth nearly 15.6 million USD, down 18.3% in volume and down 21.3% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

Vietnam’s cassava starch market share accounts for 13.89% of the total imported cassava starch in the Taiwan market, higher than the 11.11% level in the first 8 months of 2022. While the cassava starch market share of Thailand accounts for 74.86%, lower than 86.06% in the first 8 months of 2022.

In the first 8 months of 2023, the Taiwan market imported 15 tons of cassava (HS 071410), worth 8 thousand USD, down 50% in volume and 50% in value compared to the same period in 2022. Indonesia and Thailand are the two markets supplying cassava to the Taiwan market in the first 8 months of 2023, imports from these two markets are both decreasing compared to the same period in 2022.

Data shows that in the Taiwan market, Vietnamese cassava starch must compete with supplies from Thailand, Laos and Indonesia. While the demand for cassava and cassava starch in this market remains low and has not fluctuated in recent years, Vietnam’s cassava starch exports to this market are unlikely to increase strongly in the coming months.
